SANDAL CASTLE 10K
No self respecting castle is built on low ground, so the Viking
Striders could have anticipated that the Sandal Castle 10k near Wakefield was
likely to be a tough course. So it proved, not just because of the
undulations but more the fact that most of it was off-road, which meant that the
times below would have been probably three minutes faster on a normal road
course. That's the Striders' excuse anyway, always handy to have a
half-decent excuse ready for a poor set of times.
In fact Simon Griffin had a stormer in eighth place, with Andy Masterman less
than two minutes behind, although Julie Masterman and Nigel Warner were firmly
in the Close But No Cigar category as both finished second in their age groups.
Richard Bramham, closer to his target time in the club's Handicap League than
anyone else, along with Richard Anness and Sandra Brooks all ran well enough to
be near to a season's best time after the degree of difficulty was taken into
account.
The big race of course takes place at the end of the month. The Great
North Run always attracts a large contingent from Goole but there are still
places on the Striders' coach if anyone outside the club needs transport to
Newcastle. Ring Dot Pullman on 767108 for details.
